YA Series and Chill: Traits of a Hero

Charlie Hanson is an unlikely hero. I get that. He doesn't look like swoony romance heroes what with his long limbs, gangly frame, and fine duck feather hair. And his ramblings about quantum this and that aren't exactly the rousing speeches of charismatic heroes. Plus, he's kind of annoying and egocentric and geeky, but not in a "nerd culture is cool" kind of way. He's geeky in a not fit for human consumption sort of way. Which is why he spends some time seriously considering job options for his future that would limit his interactions with humans and their illogical quirks.

No, Charlie's not exactly the stuff the heroes in his favorite comic books are made of (don't get him started on Thor). But he's a hero to his sister Becca and his best friends Greta and James. And Charlotte Finch would argue that Thor, even with his muscles and long, shiny blond hair, has nothing on Charles Mortimer Hanson III.

In fact, Becca found this list in an old sketchpad of Charlotte's. Charlotte had sketched a picture of Charlie studying one night and added this list on the back.

Things I love about my Charlie

  • He's funny — In a self-deprecating, unironic, goofy sort of way that I love.
  • He's smart — I think he looks hot in his Mathlete shirt and bedhead hair in the middle of the night.
  • He's unrelenting — This guy will keep working at a problem until he solves it.
  • He's talented — He can explain math-y stuff in a way that even I start to understand it. He can explain it in a way that makes me want to understand it.
  • He's loyal — It may be hard to get inside Charlie's inner circle, but once you're there he will do ANYTHING, including risk his own future pulling pranks on his teacher, for you. Anything.
  • He's beautiful — I know he thinks he's a dork, but he's got this way of smiling that makes his whole face radiant. In a thousand lifetimes I could never perfectly capture in a drawing just how beautiful he is.

I guess the important thing about heroes is that they come in all shapes and sizes—even tall and gangly size.
